Charges Dropped Against Kip Keino as He Becomes Witness for the Prosecution

By Adam Kopet

Kipchoge "Kip" Keino will not face charges over mismanagement of funds from the 2016 Kenyan Olympic team, according to Kamore Maina for the Star.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist will instead act as a witness for the prosecution of the six other men who have been charged, including Sports Minister and Kenyan Ambassador to Austria, Hassan Wario.

Maina reports that Keino never signed any documents related to the mismanaged funds, which amounted to about $545,000 when he was the head of the Kenyan Olympic Committee. Additionally, there had been mounting political pressure, both from within Kenya and from people associated with the International Olympic Committee, to not prosecute the sports icon.

Keino had been in Sweden to accept an award at the beginning of the week, which was the reason he missed Monday's initial court appearance. He returned Wednesday night to Kenya and reported to Kenyan police early Thursday morning.
