Reports of medals beginning to flake apart less than a year after Games

By Chris Lotsbom, Dyestat Editor

Note to Rio Olympic medalists: Don't let your medal crumble. According to France 24, Olympic medals awarded last year to podium finishers at the Olympic games have begun to "flake apart."

"We're seeing problems with the covering on between six or seven percent of the medals and it seems to be to do with the difference in temperatures," Rio de Janeiro Olympic communications officer Mario Andrada told France 24.

If officials' predictions are correct, between 121 and 141 medals are impacted, according to NBC Sports.

It is unknown if this problem has ever happened for previous Olympics.

The medals will be replaced, but there's nothing like the original medal that was awarded on the podium. The USA led the medal table in track and field in Rio, taking home 32 total medals with 13 gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze. No word on if any of them have begun to flake and peal.
